Prop 401:
YES Greyhound protection / South Tucson
South Tucson voters should do the right thing for the greyhound dogs who race at the Tucson Greyhound Park, by voting to approve Proposition 401, the Tucson Dog Protection Act.
Its requirements are not draconian for the Florida-based owners of the track — and fundamentally they are humane, as more than 100 veterinarians who support the proposition agree.
Under the proposition:
• The track would be required to allow dogs out of their crates for six hours a day instead of for the mere one hour a day they are released.
• Dogs would not longer be fed 4-D, raw substandard meat, unless it was cooked or irradiated. These actions could eliminate bacteria that the dogs shed in their saliva and feces, which can pose a risk to human health.
• Female dogs would no longer receive steroid treatments that interrupt their fertility cycles and permanently undermine their health.
We understand that most of the supporters do not reside in South Tucson and we wish these issues could have been worked out legislatively.
These three reforms are little enough to require track owners to do for the canine athletes who are at the heart of their enterprise. We urge South Tucson to vote "yes" on Proposition 401.
