Edwards' Nationwide win closes points gap

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Carl Edwards is winning his way back into the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship picture.
Edwards, who dominated in 2007, put in a performance much like last season in winning Saturday's Carfax 250 at Michigan International Speedway. His second victory in five races moved him within 113 points of leader Clint Bowyer, who finished 10th.
Edwards had built a sizable margin on Tony Stewart as the race wound down, and his victory was assured when a caution was displayed on the last of the 125 laps, freezing the field.
"This is awesome to do this, to be here in Ford's backyard," said Edwards. "Ford's making a comeback, and so are we."
The only significant problem Edwards experienced was a piece of paper that got caught on his front grille, which started to raise the engine temperature in his No. 60 Ford. He was able to rub the nose of his car on the back of driver Kenny Wallace's to clear the debris.
It was the 19th victory for team co-owner Jack Roush at Michigan, but the first in the series previously sponsored by Busch since 1998.
"We've certainly had more than our share of good finishes here, and it seems like it's a track where we always race well," said Roush, whose headquarters are in nearby Livonia. "It's a very good feeling."
While Edwards was safely in the lead, other drivers were battling hard over the final laps.
Several times during the final 10 laps, Stewart, second-place Brian Vickers, Greg Biffle and fourth-place Mark Martin got caught up in three-wide racing for position.
"It was a good run. You don't want to get greedy, but you get sick and tired of not winning one of these races," Vickers said. "It seems like we lead a lot of laps. We just can't seem to lead the right one."
For the second straight week, Clint Bowyer was in an on-track incident.
At Watkins Glen, N.Y., Bowyer and Edwards twice traded contact. Saturday, Bowyer and David Reutimann made contact on Lap 91, and Reutimann cut a tire and hit the wall.
Stewart's race was his last with Joe Gibbs Racing in the series. This season he had five wins in nine appearances in the No. 20 Toyota.
NHRA
MOHNTON, Pa. — Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson took the top qualifying spot from teammate Jason Line on Saturday in the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals.
Tony Schumacher and Cruz Pedregon remained the No. 1 qualifiers in their divisions in the 17th of 24 NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series events.
After watching Line take the No. 1 spot during Friday night qualifying, Anderson drove his Pontiac GXP to a 6.611-second run at 208.84 mph in the heat of the day. It's Anderson's fifth No. 1 qualifier of the season, 67th overall and fourth in Reading.
Schumacher stayed in the top spot in Top Fuel with a 3.816-second pass at 316.67 mph. It's Schumacher's sixth No. 1 qualifier of the season, 53rd of his career and sixth at Maple Grove.
In Funny Car, Pedregon drove his Toyota Solara to a 4.109-second pass at 299 mph to take the top spot. It was Pedregon's second No. 1 qualifier of the season.
Pit stops
● Twelve-year-old Austin Irwin will act as grand marshal of today's Sprint Cup race in Michigan thanks to race sponsor 3M and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Irwin suffers from Wilm's Tumor, a type of cancer. His wish was to come to a NASCAR race and meet some drivers.
● Mark Martin will make a record 72nd Michigan start on a track where he has eight wins, including four in Cup, two in Nationwide, one in IROC and one in ARCA.
● Sixty-two of 78 Cup races at MIS have been won from a top-10 starting spot. Stewart's victory from 28th in 2001 was the farthest a driver has come for a win.
