RAY COTTMAN Q&A

From poker to break dancing, senior does all with honor

Ray Cottman is excited about his senior season of football at Ironwood Ridge. The 6-foot-1-inch, 208-pound linebacker and tight end is a physical and ambitious player, looking to help his team "as much as I can."
But when this second team All-Southern Arizona athlete is not on the field, he mostly enjoys spending quality time with family and friends at a restaurant — or a poker table.
• On his pre-game ritual: "My brother and I heard this from "Gladiator." They have this quote, 'Strength and honor,' and we try to use it daily. But before football games, I write 'strength' on his right wrist and he writes 'honor' on my left. We always go through the routine, and I try to lead my team with honor. "
• On his favorite Olympic sport: "USA softball is pretty legit. They've been playing really well and have some amazing pitchers."
• On spending time with friends: "Me and my friends usually go out to eat somewhere, which is cool with me. I like to eat! And I play poker with my family a lot. I'm pretty decent at Texas hold 'em. My mom and I dominate the table. She's pretty sneaky, but I know how to read if she's bluffing or not."
• On his hidden talent: "I used to break dance in fifth and sixth grade. I haven't really done it much since I moved here (in 2002). I'm not any good at it anymore, so don't ask me to try."
