A FLOWER to the Tucson Unified School District for finding a way to allow retirees to remain on the district's health insurance plan.
The Governing Board has reversed a May decision to eliminate the retirees from the insurance coverage in order to save administrative costs. The people affected — many of them who said they would pay much higher medical bills if forced to move to the state retirement system's health plan — understandably objected.
New Superintendent Elizabeth Celania-Fagen instructed district employees to find a compromise and an arrangement was reached: The retirees will pay administrative fees to keep their coverage. It's a good plan and we're glad common ground was reached.
A SAGUARO FLOWER to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum for its excellent ranking among U.S. zoos and wild-animal attractions. Trip Advisor (www.tripadvisor.com) selected the Desert Museum as the second-best in the nation based on its editors picks and user comments. The top spot went to the Memphis Zoo.
Many Tucsonans already know about the Desert Museum's beautiful walking paths, the natural animal enclosures and aviaries, and the educational demonstrations that help connect you to our desert environment. But we locals shouldn't take a treasure like the Desert Museum for granted — don't save it as a place you take out-of-town guests.
The Desert Museum is a great place to learn about the natural history and culture of where we live.
A thorn the Chinese organizers of the Olympic Games, who deemed 7-year-old Yang Peiyi not cute enough and put a 9-year-old in her place to lip synch to a recording of Peiyi's voice during last week's opening ceremonies.
As shown in the Star's sports section Wednesday, little Peiyi is adorable. She deserved her moment in the spotlight.
The move was an unnecessary display of heavy-handedness.
