Fans should make a point to see these 10 stars in '08Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.17.2008
• Ka'Deem Carey, So., RB, Canyon del Oro: As a 15-year-old freshman, Carey wasted no time elevating his name to prep-superstar status. The numbers were scary good: 24 carries, 311 yards (12.96 yards per carry), and eight touchdowns. Carey also returned four kickoffs — two the distance — with an average of 66.5 yards per return. All that, and he admitted to barely knowing the Dorados' high-powered offensive schemes.
•Adam Hall, Sr., WR/DB/KR, Palo Verde: A freakish athlete with an unusual combo of size (6 feet 4 inches, 200 pounds), speed (4.56 40-yard dash) and leaping ability (38-inch vertical). Hall is this season's reason to drop $5 on a ticket. Plus, as the Titans' top player on offense, defense and special teams, he should rarely leave the turf.
• Jake Fischer, Sr., LB/RB, Ironwood Ridge: Southern Arizona's most productive returning tackler, the compact Fischer (6 feet, 220 pounds) is constantly in the way of opposing running backs. Coming the other way, Fischer, while no speedster, can rack up yardage by wearing down opposing defenses with power.
• Christian Ramirez, Sr., RB, Salpointe Catholic: Not blazing, not big, just one of the most effective running backs in town. Ramirez is going to be asked to carry much of the Lancers offense on his 5-foot-11-inch frame, and judging by last year's performance (138 carries, 783 yards in eight games — an average of 97.9 yards per game), that is certainly not a source of anguish for Salpointe.
• Seth Mejias-Brean, Sr., QB, Cienega: The hyper-talented Mejias-Brean is the signal-caller in Southern Arizona this year, leading all returning quarterbacks last year in passing yards, rushing yards by a QB, touchdown passes, completions … just about every major statistical category.
• JJ Holliday, Sr., WR/DB, Santa Rita: Holliday, who has the finest set of hands in the city, was Southern Arizona's only prolific receiver in 2007, grabbing 54 receptions for 1,251 yards and 17 touchdowns. No other pass-catcher in the area totaled more than 761 yards or nine TDs.
• Laurence Gibson, Sr., DL, Sierra Vista Buena: He is huge (6 feet 5 inches, 240 pounds), yet agile — a combo that will make any football coach salivate. Gibson was overshadowed by a pair of college recruits last year (Jamal Womble, North Carolina, and Jake Muasau, Phoenix College) but owns the whole spotlight this season.
• Nick Marshall, Sr., K, Canyon del Oro: Marshall is the man with the golden leg, going a perfect 65 for 65 in point-after attempts in 2007 and 9 for 13 in field goal attempts — with a long of 46 yards.
• Andy Garcia, Sr., RB, Nogales: Garcia rushed big-time high school football back to Nogales last season, racking up 1,578 yards on the ground as the Apaches reacquainted themselves with the playoffs.
• Josh Carter, Sr., OL/DL: At 6 feet 5 inches, 290 pounds, Carter's frame already appears worthy of the next level. He is the anchor of an offensive line that paved the way for former star running back Dan Moore to roll off 1,948 yards on the ground in 2007.
