It would not be fair to call Nogales senior Andy Garcia a two-way starter. What do you call a player who excels at five positions?
Garcia is listed as the Apaches' running back, safety, kick returner, punt returner and punter. He can do it all, and last year's statistics speak for themselves: 1,578 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.
When he was not lifting weights this summer, Garcia said he was fishing in San Carlos, Mexico — with coach Vince Villanucci.
• On his summer fishing trip: "We had been on the boat for two hours and hadn't caught a thing. I was bored, so I passed out and went to sleep. All of a sudden, (Villanucci) screams, 'FISH!' He told me to start reeling in the line … sure enough there was a 20-pound Dorado. He got pretty upset because he has 10 years experience and didn't catch anything, and I got one while I was sleeping."
• On being a multiposition player: "I think punting was probably the thing people were most surprised about. I played soccer for about 14 years. I like being able to do as much as possible. A friend of (Villanucci's) was saying: 'You can run, you can catch, you can block, you can kick, you can pass. … I don't think you need a team anymore.'"
• On Nogales' strength this season: "Our offensive line is going to be very solid. The returning guys are going to come out strong and be a key part of the team this year. Plus, a lot of the team looks more disciplined.
