• The Cardinals conceded Saturday the Matt Clement signing was a failed gamble, releasing a right-hander who has struggled to return from shoulder surgery in 2006. The Cardinals also announced that outfielder and CDO High School grad Chris Duncan would undergo surgery to repair a ruptured disc in his neck on Monday, a procedure that is likely to end a star-crossed season. A third injured player, right-hander Adam Wainwright, threw curveballs for the first time while rehabbing from a tendon injury on the middle finger of his pitching hand.
• Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny allowed two runs and six hits during a four-inning rehab start Saturday night for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. Pitching against the Oklahoma RedHawks in his home state, Penny threw 67 pitches, 50 for strikes, and struck out four batters while walking one. He threw as hard as 97mph and left with Las Vegas trailing 2-1. The 30-year-old right-hander is set to rejoin the Dodgers on Monday in St. Louis, and is tentatively scheduled to start for Los Angeles on Friday against the Giants.
• Braves pitcher Tim Hudson wanted to test his arm one more time to convince himself that season-ending elbow ligament replacement surgery was necessary. After feeling more discomfort while trying to play catch on Saturday, Hudson is convinced. "All the arrows are pointing that way," Hudson said, adding he plans to have the surgery within a week. "I just wanted to try it one more time to convince myself that's what needs to get done."
• With the Brewers victory over the Braves in Atlanta, the Brewers equaled a club record with their ninth straight road win. Milwaukee also won nine straight road games in June 1973.
