• Cubs minor-league pitcher Francory Pineda was suspended 50 games Thursday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The 19-year-old righty pitched nine games in the rookie Dominican Summer League. The commissioner's office said Pineda tested positive for Stanozolol. The suspension took effect immediately.
• Padres shortstop Khalil Greene has a broken left hand and could miss the rest of the season, manager Bud Black said Thursday. After fouling a ball off his shin and then striking out in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night, Greene hit something in the tunnel between the dugout and clubhouse with his left hand, Black said. "He was in a lot of pain down in the tunnel," Black said. "I think it was frustration with getting hit and frustration just in general with his last few at-bats." Greene is expected to be out six to eight weeks, which could mean his season is over.
• Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman left Thursday night's game against the Phillies after being hit in the right hand by a pitch from Philadelphia's Kyle Kendrick. Zimmerman was examined by team physician Dr. Benjamin Shaffer. X-rays revealed no fracture, and Zimmerman is listed as day-to-day. Zimmerman is batting .264 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs in 59 games.
• Cubs closer Kerry Wood threw off the mound Thursday in his effort to return from a pesky blister that has turned into an open sore, a day after his manager said he was not close to returning. Wood threw about two dozen pitches off the Miller Park mound against hitters with a protective pad on his right index finger several hours before the NL Central-leading Cubs took on the Brewers.
