A Tucson man who was out on bail when he opened fire in Park Place mall last July was convicted of aggravated assault and endangerment by a jury Friday afternoon.
After deliberating more than six hours, the jury also found Vicente Arturo Alcaraz not guilty on a charge of attempted armed robbery.
Alcaraz will get at least five years in prison and as many as 18 at his sentencing, which is expected in early July. Prosecutor Mark Diebolt said he will ask for the maximum term.
"There were many people there, including kids, teenagers and employees, and he placed everyone at risk," Diebolt said. "He needs to be held accountable for his behavior."
The handgun was fired at least four times on a busy afternoon at the mall, 5870 E. Broadway.
Alcaraz was arrested after a man told police Alcaraz pulled a handgun on him at Dillard's and demanded his jewelry.
The victim in the case said he tried to grab the gun and ended up getting shot in the foot during the ensuing struggle, court documents state.
Alcaraz was shot in the left hand, and another shopper was struck in the leg by bullet fragments.
Alcaraz had been released six months earlier after serving time on weapons misconduct and theft charges.
A fourth charge — that Alcaraz was illegally carrying a gun as a felon — was separated from the rest of the charges so as not to prejudice the jury.
Alcaraz is expected to plead guilty to that charge at sentencing, but it will not add any additional penalty.
