Political Notebook by Daniel Scarpinato : Sorely out of touch on critical TV program

As tens of millions lined up last week for the release of "Sex and the City," at least a couple of people we know couldn't have cared less about Carrie Bradshaw and her Manolo Blahniks.
Asked last week by D.C.'s The Hill which of the show's four characters appealed to her the most, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords responded: "I've never really seen it."
She wasn't alone. Most members of Congress whom the magazine asked had no clue about the HBO show or new movie. And these people are supposed to be representing us?
So we asked her Republican competitor, state Senate President Tim Bee, and he pretty much gave the same answer.
"I have six small children at home," he said. The Bees are currently watching "The Waltons," "Winnie the Pooh" and "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."
Shazam!
Giffords, meanwhile, has a pretty dull appetite for the small screen, too: C-SPAN and HBO's "John Adams" series. She also has become an obsessive follower of NASA TV ever since her husband was launched into space last weekend.
It's a sign
The list of similarities between Tim and Gabrielle keeps growing.
They went to the same elementary school. Both prefer politicking to prime-time television. Both served in the state Senate. Both are third generation Tucsonans ... and both are June babies, or Geminis.
That makes them articulate and sociable, but also restless and two-faced, according to astrologers. We wonder why people with this zodiac sign are so drawn to politics.
Giffords' birthday is tomorrow — she'll be 38. And Bee turns 39 on June 20.
It's actually the political birthday season.
Other Geminis, former Gov. Rose Mofford turns 86 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, indicted U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi turns 50. Rep. Trent Franks is 51 on the 19th.
Retired Rep. Jim Kolbe and current Rep. Ed Pastor share a birthday, June 28. They're one year apart — Kolbe will be 66 and Pastor 65. They slide into Cancer: romantic and somewhat insecure. Like Rep. Harry Mitchell, who'll be 68 on July 18.
And, of course, there's John McCain, who will turn 72 on Aug. 29. He's a Virgo: diplomatic but possibly manipulative.
For the record, Barack Obama turns 47 on Aug. 4. Leo: drawn to the spotlight, potentially bossy.
I do, cherish you, Ralph
Candidates from all over the state turned in their nominating petitions on Wednesday to make it onto the Arizona ballot, but Ralph Nader was the only candidate we know of who had a celebrity surrogate complete the task.
The perennial presidential candidate sent Justin Jeffre, a staffer and a former member of the boy band 98 Degrees, to our state Capitol to file for him.
"What we're doing is putting issues back on the table that have been taken off the table by Barack Obama, like single-payer health care," said Jeffre, 35.
Outside of politics, Jeffre said, his old pop group is looking at reuniting for a new album.
"I still keep in touch with the guys regularly," he said. "It's just difficult to work everyone's schedule."
So how about an endorsement for Nader from fellow band member Nick Lachey, former husband of Jessica Simpson?
"I think he definitely pays attention to politics," Jeffre said, "but he tries to shy away from taking a stance publicly."
Never mind
In the Congressional District 8 race, independent candidate Derek Tidball is out before he was even in. Days before the deadline for filing nominating petitions, Tidball dropped his bid and endorsed Bee.
Bee, meanwhile, flew to D.C. Wednesday for a Thursday fundraiser at Kolbe's Washington home. Kolbe is the former holder of the seat Giffords now occupies.
