Vail district students star in stock market contest
A group of Vail School District elementary students took the top four places in the Arizona Council on Economic Education stock market game competition.
The competition lasted from September until April. The winners were honored May 13 before an Arizona Diamondbacks game at Chase Field in Phoenix.
The contest featured a simulated online game in which students researched stocks throughout the year and had to decide whether to buy or sell certain stocks.
The game reflected how the real stock market fared during that time period.
The students won cash prizes ranging from $25 to $100.
First-place winners were Alex Colpo, a fifth-grader at Mesquite Elementary School, and Jacen Blackburn, a fifth-grader at Cottonwood Elementary School.
Cottonwood sixth-grader Brant Mauras won second place in the competition, while Desert Willow Elementary School fifth-grader Andre Ferarra took third place.
Two other sixth-graders from Cottonwood, Jay Bol and Brandon Dube, were in fourth place.
Desert Willow fifth-grader Chris Bohlman won a laptop for his essay on dividend investment.
