The Sky Island Alliance honored Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll on Friday with its Public Service Award for his opposition to the proposed Rosemont Mine.
The Sky Island Alliance works to protect the mostly undisturbed ecosystems that exist at higher altitudes in the mountains that ring Tucson.
Sky Island Alliance development associate Moniqua Lane said Carroll was honored for his activism in trying to stop the copper mine proposed by Augusta Resource Corp. in the Santa Rita Mountains.
"The Santa Ritas are one of our most important sky islands. It's very important to us and to the community, and we think Ray has done a great job," Lane said.
The mine proposal currently is before the National Forest Service.
Carroll, a Republican, also was honored last year by the Environmental Protection Agency's Pacific/Southwest Region for his environmental leadership.
The Sky Island Alliance also honored outdoor gear and clothing retailer Summit Hut and Dave Parsons of New Mexico-based The Rewilding Institute.
