A prescribed burn near Redington Pass caused smoke to linger across the city Thursday because of moisture and wind from a storm cell to the east.
The Tucson Fire Department was inundated with hundreds of calls about the smoke, said Capt. Norm Carlton, an agency spokesman. The Fire Department did not receive any reports of respiratory problems as a result of the burn, he said.
Some residents said they could strongly smell the smoke even while indoors Thursday evening.
The burn at Agua Caliente Hill was being conducted to improve wildlife habitat and decrease the potential for catastrophic wildfire.
It began around 8 a.m. and the smoke was mostly contained to the Northeast Side until a shift in wind blew it to the South and West sides of Tucson, said Heidi Schewel, a Coronado National Forest spokeswoman.
As of Thursday evening it appeared the objectives of the burn had been met, and it is unlikely that the burn will continue today.
