Mesa Air Group Inc. said Wednesday that it plans to stop government-subsidized flights out of Prescott and Kingman in August because soaring fuel costs have made them unprofitable, The Associated Press reported.
The Phoenix-based carrier's subsidiary, Air Midwest, had been providing air service to the small cities under the U.S. Department of Transportation's essential air service program.
The program helps carriers fly into airports that normally would be unprofitable.
Air Midwest is the only airline serving those cities, with 20 flights out of Kingman and 18 flights out of Prescott every week. Mesa had agreed to operate flights until Sept. 30, 2009, receiving about $3.6 million in subsidies from the federal government for the two-year term.
