Tucson-based Global Solar Energy, a maker of thin-film solar cells, said it will work with a unit of Dow Chemical Co. to develop a flexible solar-electric roof shingle.
The project with Dow Building Solutions is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar America Initiative program to help create innovative building-integrated photovoltaic products. The goal of the initiative is to make solar power cost-competitive with grid-supplied electricity by 2015.
Bob Cleereman, senior director of solar and structural technology with Dow Building Solutions, said in a statement that Global Solar was the only company able to supply a qualifying flexible copper indium gallium diselenide material for the project. Global Solar said that it replaced Dow's original photovoltaic material provider in the program.
