Search continues for missing balloonist
SAO PAULO — Rescuers scoured the waters off Brazil's southern Atlantic coast on Tuesday, looking for a Roman Catholic priest who disappeared after floating into the sky strapped to hundreds of helium party balloons.
The Rev. Adelir Antonio di Carli lifted off from the port city of Paranagua on Sunday afternoon wearing a helmet, aluminum thermal flight suit, waterproof coveralls and parachute in a bid to break a record for the longest time in-flight with party balloons.
He was reported missing about eight hours later. A cluster of colored balloons were found Tuesday night, floating intact in the sea off Brazil's southern Santa Catarina state near di Carli's last contact point, according to a photograph posted on Sao Paulo's UOL news Web site.

2 survivors of sinking receiving treatment
NASSAU — Two Haitians who survived the capsizing of their migrant-laden boat were being treated for exposure Tuesday as the U.S. Coast Guard scanned the seas for other victims of the sinking that claimed as many as 22 lives.
Officials estimate that 25 people were aboard when the boat went down on Saturday as it headed for Florida. Only three have been found alive.
The bodies of 14 Haitians have been recovered, said Coast Guard spokesman Barry Bena — correcting a previous count of 20 caused by double-counting of some bodies. Chief Petty Officer Ralph McKinney of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force said the bodies were of 12 women and two men. A Coast Guard cutter, jet and helicopter were continuing the search Tuesday.

Lab technician held in sperm-bank scam
MUMBAI — A laboratory technician who allegedly tried to make a quick buck by stealing samples from the Indian sperm bank where he worked has been arrested after a doctor tipped off police, authorities said Tuesday.
The employee allegedly stole the sperm from a sperm bank in the western city of Aurangabad, and tried to sell 101 vials of it to a doctor in Mumbai for about $625, Aurangabad Police Chief Krishna Lal Bishnoi said.
The doctor declined and called police, who arrested the lab employee and a relative, Bishnoi said.
Police said the two men will be charged with stealing and cheating, and each could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

Invitation-only crowd watches torchbearers
JAKARTA — Torchbearers ran laps with the Olympic flame in front of an invitation-only crowd Tuesday after officials changed the relay route from Jakarta's streets to a sports stadium amid pressure from China to keep away demonstrators.
Police arrested several protesters rallying nearby and seized Tibetan flags and banners in the latest actions against a global relay that Beijing had hoped would promote the Aug. 8-24 Olympics.
Indonesia deployed water cannons and 3,000 police officers in the capital.
