Tucson High Magnet presents 'Jimmy Dean'

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.18.2008
● The Tucson High Magnet School's drama department is taking us to Texas with its production of "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean."
The Ed Graczyk play is about a group of devout fans of the actor James Dean. In the 1950s, the teens, who called themselves "The Disciples of James Dean," met regularly at the five and dime to discuss their great love. One, who had a part as an extra on the movie "Giant," which starred Dean, announced she's pregnant by the actor.
Whip forward 20 years later, when the Disciples get together for a reunion.
Art Almquist directs the comedy.
Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday, next Friday, April 26, and May 1-3 at the Tucson High Little Theatre, on the southwest corner of North Euclid Avenue and East Sixth Street.Tickets are $7, with discounts available. Call 225-5326.
"Homoneurotic." Just the name makes us giggle.
The show, we suspect, will make us laugh right out loud.
"Homoneurotic II" is a comedy show from Homoneurotic Productions. It's a music show. It's drama. It's got men in towels.
If it sounds familiar, you might have caught the Homoneurotic show a couple of years back.
But don't expect a rehash— we're told it's all new material by this gay-themed sketch comedy troupe.
It's slated for 8 p.m. today, Saturday, next Friday and April 26, and 2 p.m. April 27 at the Cabaret Theatre at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. It's designed with adults in mind. $12. Information at www.homoneurotic.org.
● We generally find Harry Clark's wonderful storytelling in Chamber Music Plus Southwest productions.
But he's taken pen to paper to compose a play that will benefit the Alzheimer's Association Desert Southwest Chapter.
And he's attracted some of Tucson's top talent to put it together.
"Pluto Déjà Vu" is a memory play about seven friends in a Tucson-based book. One, it seems, is suffering from "chronic déjà vu."
Cynthia Meier directs, and the cast includes Alida Gunn, Joe McGrath, and Molly McKasson.
It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Copper Hall at Hotel Congress, 311 E. Congress St. Tickets are $25. Call 622-8848.
