Beginning Tuesday, the road into upper Sabino Canyon will be closed to repair flooding and landslide damage in the recreation area, officials said.
The closure, which could remain in effect through June, will begin at the "Flood Gate" at Shuttle Stop No. 2, which is just below Bridge No. 1 — about 1.4 miles into the canyon, according to a news release from the Coronado National Forest.
The closure applies only to the road. All trails will be open, the release said. Link trails from the Phoneline Trail that access the road in the construction area also will remain open, but entry into the construction zone is prohibited and signs will be posted to advise hikers of that.
The road into lower Sabino and Bear canyons will not be affected, the release said.
The upper shuttle route operated by Sabino Canyon Tours Inc. will travel to shuttle stop 2 and to lower Sabino Canyon; however, once construction work has moved farther up into the canyon, the road will be opened to shuttle stop 4.
Repairs to damage from recent winter flooding will run through April 14, the release said. Repairs to damage from rock slides and flooding that occurred in July 2006 will begin April 15 and continue through July 15.
For more information, call the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center at 749-8700.
