Che's last day subject of Borderlands' latest

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.23.2008
Playwright José Rivera imagines what Ernesto "Che" Guevara's last day on Earth was like in "School of the Americas," which Borderlands Theater opens this week.
Rivera was nominated for an Oscar for his script for "Motorcycle Diaries," and "School" grew out of his research for that project, which was about a young Che before his revolutionary days.
The story takes place on the day of Che's execution and zeros in on his interactions with a young schoolteacher.
"He has become such an icon," Rivera said of Che. "But he was a man who struggled with his own failures.
"I want people to come to understand and appreciate the man behind the myth."
"School of the Americas," directed by Eva Tessler, previews at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with regular performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. next Sunday. It continues through April 6 at the Cabaret Theatre at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Tickets are $10.75-$19.75, with discounts available. Call 882-7406 for more information.
