A team of scientists from the University of Arizona, Raytheon Missile Systems and Carnegie Mellon University will take part in the first private robotic race to the Moon, according to a UA news release.
The international race is sponsored by Google Inc. and The X Prize Foundation, a non-profit group that fosters innovation through competition.
Teams will work to land a robot on the Moon's surface that is capable of traveling 500 meters and sending images back to Earth.
The UA, Raytheon and Carnegie Mellon partnership will compete as Team Astrobotic.
Together, the organizations are "a space exploration powerhouse," said the UA's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Director, Michael Drake.
The first team to complete the mission by Dec. 31, 2012 will win $20 million. The second place prize is $5 million and another $5 million will be awarded in bonus prizes.
Teams must be 90 percent privately funded, and can register until Dec. 31, 2010. For further details, visit www.googlelunarxprize.org.
