Instead of sleeping in Saturday, a group of six St. Gregory College Preparatory School students braved the cold, damp air to paint lions, alligators and giraffes on a wall at a Midtown school.
The group went to the International School of Tucson, 1730 N. First Ave., to put finishing touches on the second of three murals there.
The murals were the idea of St. Gregory French teacher Amy Clashman, whose 5-year-old son attends the International School.
"I wanted to support the school," she said. "I wanted to make it brighter and more fun."
Since last October, Clashman has taken the French Club to the language-immersion school to work on the murals. Since then, the group has grown to include students from all the language clubs at the school.
Students who work on the murals have the opportunity to earn community-service credit. Clashman said most already have plenty of community-service credit and come out to paint for fun.
Every other Saturday, between six and eight St. Gregory students go to the school to paint. The group has finished one wall, which is painted with an underwater theme. The second mural, nearly finished, depicts a savanna scene with a lion, giraffes and a hippopotamus. The third mural will depict a tropical rain forest.
The murals help depict the International School's global outlook, Clashman said. The group has added to existing murals that have been painted by parents over the years, she said.
Harbhajan Khalsa, a junior at St. Gregory, hasn't missed a Saturday meeting.
"I don't have much art experience, so I just paint and do what I'm told," she said with a smile. "But it has been a lot of fun."
