The busiest and most joyful day of the high school winter sports season produced more than two dozen state championships for Southern Arizona teams and individuals. In 4A-I girls soccer, Sabino beat Cienega 8-7 in a shootout, while Catalina Foothills won over Goodyear Millennium 2-1 in the boys 4A-I final. The Rincon/University girls team won the 5A-II soccer title 1-0 over Glendale Ironwood. At the state wrestling meets, 12 local big-school wrestlers — hailing from five different schools — and 11 small-school athletes won individual championships. Three winners from Pueblo helped the South Side school claim the 4A-I team state crown. Safford won the 3A team title for the fourth straight season.
