YUMA — Seven preteens and teenagers were arrested near San Luis Monday morning after authorities say they tried to smuggle more than 115 pounds of marijuana into the country.
Border Patrol spokesman Andrew Patterson says five of the juveniles used rope ladders to climb a fence where agents were lying in wait.
Patterson says each of the boys was carrying a backpack stuffed with marijuana.
While apprehending those five, all Mexican citizens, agents were alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the area.
Agents stopped the vehicle and determined the two U.S. citizens inside, also boys, were involved in the smuggling operation.
All seven ranged in ages from 12 to 17. They were taken into custody.
Patterson says the pot had an estimated worth of more than $272,000.
