The popularity of deep-fried turkey on Thanksgiving can be a bane to the sewer system or a boon to biodiesel.
When cooking grease goes down the drain, it can clog sewers and contribute to back-ups. But if cooks bring their grease to the third annual Grease Recycle Event Friday, Grecycle will turn it into biodiesel.
Grecycle is a Tucson-based grease recycler working on a pilot program to produce biodiesel here. While most of their grease comes from restaurants, the company works with the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department and the Tucson Regional Clean Cities Program to man grease collection sites around Tucson on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Last year, 1,400 pounds of grease were collected the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Michael Kazz, owner of Grecycle, said it's a good way for the public to get involved.
Grecycle still operates on a small scale, but hopes to expand production soon.
Kazz said the most important thing is to keep the grease away from water. But to help get the most use out of your grease, follow these tips:
● Allow cooking grease, fats and oils to cool.
● If you have a strainer, use it to remove food particles from the grease.
● Use a spatula to empty the grease into a dry plastic container with a lid.
● Wipe utensils and cookware with a disposable cloth before washing.
If you miss the Grease Recyle Event, Grecycle maintains two year-round collection sites at Originate, 526 N. Ninth Ave., 12:30 - 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and at Tania's "33," 614 N. Grande Ave., 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
