PHOENIX — A Democratic legislator who represents the Foothills, Oro Valley and parts of Marana suffered a "minor stroke," but is coherent and making a full recovery, her family said Tuesday through a spokeswoman.
State Rep. Lena Saradnik, 60, was traveling in Massachusetts when she suffered the stoke two weeks ago.
Saradnik was hospitalized and has since been relocated to a Boston-area rehabilitation facility, where she is currently undergoing treatment, said Emily Bittner, spokeswoman for the Arizona Democratic Party.
"She is expected to fully recover," said Bittner, who spoke with Saradnik's family by telephone. "She's just as chatty as ever."
Tucson Rep. Phil Lopes, House minority leader, said he, too, has been in contact with Saradnik's family regularly. He said she's "recovering well," and that she plans to file her petitions for re-election in December.
Saradnik plans to remain in Boston through Thanksgiving and then return to Tucson, as she originally planned.
Saradnik's husband, Steve, was being inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball Hall of Fame, and she was also helping her daughter, who lives in Boston, to plan a wedding next year when the stroke occurred.
Bittner did not provide details on the stroke, only to say that it wasn't serious. Saradnik and her family could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
"She's undergoing therapy right now," Bittner said.
Bittner said Saradnik will "absolutely" be ready to get back to work in time for the next legislative session, which begins in January.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family," Bittner said.
Saradnik, a Democrat, was elected to the Legislature in 2006.
In May, a colleague of Saradnik, state Sen. Albert Hale, a Democrat from Window Rock, also was taken to a Boston Hospital for blood spotting in the brain. Doctors found no trace of aneurysm or vessel rupture.
