Arizona State University has announced a research partnership with energy company BP PLC and Science Foundation Arizona to develop a renewable source of biofuel.
The project focuses on using a special photosynthetic bacterium to produce biodiesel, a sustainable fuel that can be used in conventional engines.
Large-scale microbial cultivation, using only solar energy and an environmentally controlled production facility, can be set up on arid land, ASU said.
