Officers at Arizona's ports of entry last weekend stopped attempts to smuggle methamphetamine and cocaine across the border and arrested a prison escapee from Pennsylvania.
On Sunday at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in downtown Nogales, Customs and Border Protection officers were questioning Matthew Murray, 40, of Wilmington, Del., when a records check revealed he was wanted in Pennsylvania on charges of escape, burglary and dangerous drugs, said Brian Levin, Customs and Border Protection spokesman.
Officers detained Murray until Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies took him into custody.
Since Oct. 1, the beginning of federal fiscal year 2008, officers have arrested 65 people with warrants at the Arizona ports, Levin said.
Also Sunday, officers at the port of entry in Douglas stopped a 38-year-old Mexican citizen from Manteca, Calif., who was driving a 2007 Mercedes Benz ML350, Levin said. Officers decided to search his SUV after noticing nervous behavior.
An agency dog alerted officers to the smell of narcotics, and officers found 27 packages of cocaine hidden inside a compartment built into the floor, Levin said. The 59 pounds have an estimated value of $414,829 according to figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center.
The man, a legal permanent resident living in the United States, was arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
On Saturday, officers at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry discovered 15 packages of methamphetamine inside a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 22-year-old woman from Nogales, Sonora, Levin said.
The 18 pounds of methamphetamine have an estimated value of $234,000, according to figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center. The woman was arrested.
Since Oct. 1, officers have stopped 15 attempts at smuggling marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine, seizing nearly 850 pounds of drugs, Levin said.
