U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered the remains of two suspected illegal border crossers in separate incidents.
Agents spotted what appeared to be a body in the San Pedro River area at 6:40 a.m. Monday, south of Palominas in Cochise County, less than three miles north of the international border, said Jesús Rodriguez, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman. They found a body of an adult woman near Smith Road, south of Arizona 92. The body appeared to have been there for at least two weeks, he said.
Agents were tracking a group by helicopter when they spotted the body, said Carol Capas, Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman. Deputies who arrived to take over the scene said there were no signs of foul play but the cause of death hadn't yet been determined, she said.
The name, hometown and age of the woman are unknown. Deputies found no identification or personal belongings near the body, Capas said. The woman wore black pants with black shoes and a black tank top and had black hair, she said.
An autopsy is planned.
Border Patrol agents walking on an established trail west of Milepost 38 on Arizona 286, south of Three Points, encountered skeletal remains at 1 p.m. Saturday, Rodriguez said. It is unclear if they are of a man or woman, he said. The Pima County Sheriff's Department took over the investigation.
The two bodies were presumably the first two border deaths of fiscal year 2008, which began Oct. 1.
Fiscal year 2007 was a near-record year for border deaths along Arizona's stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border. The agency hasn't yet released year-end figures, but from Oct. 1 through this Sept. 16, the tally for the Tucson Sector had reached 190, a significant increase from the 164 found the previous year and second to the record-setting 216 found in fiscal 2005.
The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office handled 204 bodies from Oct. 1 through Sept. 27, which surpassed the record 199 it handled during federal fiscal year 2005, and was nearly 19 percent more than the 2006 total of 171.
