Two University of Arizona projects have been named finalists for the Governor's Celebration of Innovation awards.
The Phoenix Mars Mission and the BIO5 Institute's Drug Discovery and Development Initiative were named as finalists Thursday by the Arizona Technology Council, in partnership with the Arizona Department of Commerce.
The projects were chosen by a committee of business and academic leaders, and are based on their contribution to the business and technology community and their innovation.
The winners will be announced in December.
The award categories include the Pioneering Innovation Award, the Innovator of the Year Award for small companies, large companies and academia, the William F. McWhortor Community Service Leader of the Year Award, the Ed Denison Business Leader of the Year Award and the Pioneering Innovation Award.
Two local students were also named Young Innovator of the Year award winners. William Guarino, who attended Salpointe Catholic High School, and Niles Frazier, who attended Tucson High School, will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The Teacher of the Year Award went to Timothy J. Barry of Salpointe.
