Accused impersonator of judge's kin indicted anew

A Tucson woman indicted in June on charges she impersonated a judge's daughter has been indicted again, this time for fraud, theft and forgery.
Although Oro Valley police officials couldn't immediately comment on the case, a five-count indictment filed late Monday afternoon accused Rebecca Jo Burke, 24, of obtaining between $4,000 and $25,000 from an Oro Valley man by "means of a material misrepresentation."
Burke was being held in the Pima County jail Tuesday afternoon on $25,000 bail.
Three months ago, another Pima County grand jury charged Burke with one count each of taking the identity of another, fraudulent scheme and artifice, and theft by misrepresentation.
Burke is accused in that case of collecting rent from five people for a house on the South Side, despite the fact the house belongs to her father-in-law and she never intended to allow the people to move in.
Burke obtained between $2,000 and $3,000 between Aug. 1, 2006, and May 16, 2007, according to that indictment.
That indictment also alleges that Burke passed herself off as Rebecca Bernini in that same time period.
Deborah Bernini, a Pima County Superior Court judge, told the Arizona Daily Star Burke had been telling people she was the judge's daughter for the past couple of years.
Court documents indicate Burke told one of the victims of the alleged rental scam "not to mess with her because her mother is a Superior Court judge. She would have the heat brought down on her hard if she did not stop harassing her."
Because Judge Bernini was named as a victim, a Pinal County judge is presiding over the case.
Last month, Burke was scheduled to enter a guilty plea in that case, but the hearing was postponed after two of her alleged victims objected to the plea agreement.
Burke is scheduled to appear in court on that case Thursday.
Assistant Pima County Public Defender Kevin Burke did not return a phone call seeking comment Tuesday.
