Cuevas, Carr join Cobre in fundraiser
Some Tucson mariachi favorites are stopping through for the 2007 Harmonía Fiesta benefit concert this Saturday. Aida Cuevas, Vikki Carr and Mariachi Cobre are all scheduled to perform in a concert to help raise money for St. Augustine Cathedral renovations.
Funds will go toward fixing up the cathedral's placita and hall, which will be dedicated to Monsignor Arsenio S. Carrillo in October. Carrillo is uncle to Cobre's Orlando, Fla.-based founders Randy and Steve Carrillo.
"It is a real pleasure to be on stage with women of this caliber," Randy Carrillo told the Star. "They are consummate professionals and when they go on stage, you will get 150 percent out of both of these women."
The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Tucson Arena. Tickets are $40-$80 through Ticketmaster, 321-1000.

Guitarist pilots his own starship now
Craig Chaquico, who served as lead guitarist for Jefferson Starship and Starship for more than 17 years, will make an appearance in Tucson this Sunday.
Chaquico was discovered as a teen by Jefferson Airplane's Paul Kantner and was officially invited to join up with Jefferson Starship in 1972. The guitarist will be joined in Tucson by Turning Point, a band led by Phoenix-area brothers Thano and Demitri Sahnas. The Sahnas brothers came through town in July as an acoustic duo with tracks from their latest album, "Cinema."
Sunday's concert will serve as the finale to the Tucson Jazz Society's summer series. It starts at 7:15 p.m. in the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort's Kiva Ballroom. Tickets are $25 with discounts available through the society, 903-1265. For more information, visit www.tucsonjazz.org.

'The Guys' captures angst of Sept. 11
The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, were devastating for most Americans, particularly for the firefighters who lost good friends and co-workers.
"The Guys" is a tear-jerker of a play that brings that heartache right home.
Catalina Players is presenting the two-person play. It's a true story about a fire captain in search of a writer to help him write the many eulogies he must present at memorial services.
The production of the Anne Nelson play is directed by Bill C. Fikaris and stars Betty Sproul and retired New York City firefighter Nick Cianciotto. Performances are 1:30 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday, Tuesday, next Friday and Sept. 15 at Academy Hall, 6653 E. Carondolet Drive. All tickets are $19. Call 1-800-838-3006 for reservations. Though it normally does dinner theater, Catalina Players is serving up the play minus the meal this time.
