A man suffered second-degree burns Saturday afternoon when a cigarette apparently ignited a fire at his apartment in an assisted-living home.
The Tucson Fire Department was notified of the fire at 2:20 p.m. by apartment residents, said Capt. Norm Carlton, an agency spokesman. The blaze broke out at Catalina Village in the 5300 block of East First Street.
Before firefighters arrived, an employee at the complex saw the blaze, went into the apartment and carried the resident — a man in his 50s — outside, Carlton said.
The cause of the fire is believed to be a combination of smoking while using an oxygen tank, Carlton said. The couch caught on fire and the man was burned on his legs. Approximately 20 people were evacuated from the complex.
Sprinklers in the apartment went off, which helped firefighters keep the blaze confined to that single unit. "Had the building not had a sprinkler system, that resident probably would've been dead," Carlton said.
