It's been more than a week since Sweetie — the 150-pound tortoise — wandered away from her Midtown home, but today she is expected to be reunited with her family.
She was picked up not too far from home last week after a woman saw Sweetie crossing the street near North Swan Road and East Fifth Street.
The woman called a local business — D&M's Reptile Rescue and Rehabilitation — after getting Sweetie out of harm's way and moving her into her yard, said Melanie Shroyer, who runs the business with her husband, David McKnight.
Over the last week, Sweetie has been well taken care of and fed, Shroyer said.
Sweetie's family had not seen her Friday evening, but they and the owners of the business are all certain it's the family's beloved pet.
"She's here, safe and sound," Shroyer said. "We're just glad she's going home to her family."
Quanna Coahran — Sweetie's owner — said the tortoise likely wandered away when someone left the backyard gate open.
The family has had Sweetie for the last 11 years, Coahran said. She was a gift to Coahran's daughter on her fourth birthday.
At the time, Sweetie was the size of a chocolate-chip cookie, Coahran said. She is now almost large enough to be ridden by a small child.
D&M's Reptile Rescue and Rehabilitation has been operating in Arizona for seven years, Shroyer said.
The purpose of the business is to rescue unwanted and mistreated reptiles in Tucson and the surrounding areas.
