A 1-year-old girl drowned Saturday evening when she slipped out of her East Side home and climbed into an above-ground pool in her backyard, officials said.
The drowning is the second of a child in the city this year. There have been nine near-drownings.
According to officials, the girl was at home in the 2000 block of South McConnell Drive, near East Golf Links and South Pantano roads, with her parents and at least four other children when she apparently went out the back door and made her way to the pool.
She used an A-frame ladder to get into the water and was not discovered until about 15 minutes later, said Lt. Bill Ryberg of the Tucson Police Department.
Her parents pulled her from the pool, which is 3 to 4 feet deep, and took her into the home but did not know how to perform CPR.
Michael DeSchalit, who lives next door, heard yelling and screaming from the home as he was leaving to go to the store.
He said two boys came outside and told him that "the baby had fallen into the pool."
DeSchalit went inside and found the father patting the girl on her back at which time he took her, placed her on the ground and began performing CPR, which he learned several years ago.
The Tucson Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and continued CPR while taking the girl to Tucson Medical Center where she died a short time later, officials said.
While the child, whose name was not released Saturday, did not survive, the Tucson Fire Department credits DeSchalit with giving her the best possible chance.
"It's really important for obvious reasons that you learn CPR," said DeSchalit, who has two daughters of his own. "Don't think it won't happen to you."
Battalion Chief Paul Mc- Donough of the Tucson Fire Department said this tragic incident is a reminder of the importance of keeping an eye on your children at all times and of securing your pool.
