A 5-year-old girl nearly drowned in a pool at an East Side apartment complex Wednesday night, a Tucson Fire Department official said.
The girl was swimming in the shallow end of the pool about 8 p.m. with other children and adults at an apartment complex in the 3300 block of South Mann Avenue, said Battalion Chief Paul McDonough, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
The girl — a beginning swimmer — made her way to the deep end and struggled in the water, McDonough said. Adults pulled her from the water when they realized she was struggling.
The girl was conscious and responsive to paramedics when they arrived. She was transported to a hospital in stable condition, McDonough said.
This is the ninth near-drowning of children under 12 the Fire Department has responded to this year, McDonough said.
One child has drowned, McDonough said.
