Up to 200 retired greyhounds at Tucson Greyhound Park are in need of new homes, prompting an adoption drive.

There are at least 100 dogs in the track's pet kennel, said Rory Goree, president of Greyhound Pets of America, which oversees adoptions at Tucson Greyhound park. But when the active racing kennels are included, there may be as many 200 dogs that need to find new homes.

Tucson Greyhound Park, because of its low purses, is considered by many greyhound advocates to be a destination for dogs at the end of their careers. It has had numerous issues with retired greyhounds. For example, last year, more than 140 retired greyhounds disappeared, prompting an investigation by the state's Department of Racing.

Goree said he is seeking to place dogs regionally with other chapters, but he would like to boost local adoptions as well.
