Six Tucson-area auto repair shops were among 23 across the state named to AAA Arizona's annual list of 'Top Shops' for their expertise and ethics.

The local AAA top shops are:

● Borst Automotive, 1255 S. Swan Road, which made the AAA list for the sixth time.

● Three locations of AASTRO Transmission & Auto Repair: 8150 E. 22nd St.; 5302 E. Speedway; and 4443 W. Ina Road, Marana.

● Hickey Automotive, 250 W. Calle De Las Tiendas, Green Valley, another six-time honoree.

● Oracle Ford Mercury Service Center, 3950 W. Arizona 77, Oracle.

All Top Shops must first be AAA Arizona Approved Auto Repair shops before they can apply for consideration as a Top Shop, said Michelle Donati, AAA Arizona spokeswoman.

There's no monetary fee or payment to be an Approved Auto Repair Shop, nor is there any charge to join the running to become a Top Shop, she said.

All AAA-approved shops must meet more than 20 standards that include providing a list of 200 customers to be surveyed on the shop's service; staffing with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified technicians; providing a 12-month/12,000 mile warranty on repair work; agreeing to binding arbitration if there is a dispute with an AAA member; and allowing an annual inspection by AAA.

Top Shops also cannot have had any complaints within the past year and must adhere to the ethics requirements put forth by the Better Business Bureau.

Top Shops must also have at least a 90 percent approval rating on customer surveys, be actively involved in the community through service groups and charities, and uphold an exemplary business reputation.

Twenty-five Arizona shops applied this year for the Top Shop designation, Donati said.
