NL inside pitch

• The batting helmet Dodgers pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo wore when he hit the Dodgers' third home run on as many pitches against John Maine of the New York Mets on Tuesday night was sent to the Hall of Fame. It was the seventh time in history that a pitcher was a part of a trio of consecutive home runs, and only the second time since 1963.
• Barry Bonds got a break — save for a pinch-hit strikeout to end the game on Wednesday. That gives the slugger two days of rest before he is the designated hitter at Boston all weekend — the club's first trip to Fenway Park since the New York Giants visited the Boston Braves in 1915.
• Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman apologized on the air for comparing Cincinnati's upcoming road trip to the Bataan Death March. Brennaman told radio listeners during the Reds' game Tuesday night against the Angels that he was wrong to make the comparison in an earlier broadcast, "and I profusely apologize." Thousands of captured U.S. and Filipino soldiers were forced to walk 70 miles to a concentration camp during World War II, many dying along the way. A radio listener in New Mexico heard Brennaman's remark about Bataan and sent the Reds an e-mail objecting to the comparison.
• The Cubs optioned outfielder Matt Murton to Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday to get him more at-bats and recalled left-handed reliever Clay Rapada. Murton had platooned with veteran Cliff Floyd in left and right field, and his batting average dropped from .297 last year — his first full season in the big leagues — to .252 in 49 games this year.
• Chipper Jones was activated from the disabled list by the Braves before their game Wednesday at Minnesota. Jones was inserted as the designated hitter to give his bruised hands more rest.
