Dinner raises $58K for UA scholarships and research
The University of Arizona College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) held the fourth annual Magellan Circle Dinner and Lecture on March 20 at the Manning House.
More than $58,000 was raised through new memberships and membership renewals. The Circle supports the Dean's Fund for Excellence, which provides money for student scholarships and faculty teaching and research.
Speakers were head of the UA department of psychology, Al Kaszniak; UA President Robert Shelton; and Provost George Davis.
The event, attended by more than 200 people, was organized by Gail Godbey, assistant director of development for SBS. SBS Dean Ed Donnerstein was master of ceremonies.
Attendees included Regent Fred Boice and his wife, Ann; Shirley Chann; Hank and Margaret Kenski; Manny and Jenny Molina; Alberto and Gesine Moore; John and Helen Schaefer; and Gwen Weiner.
AIDS Foundation hands out awards at annual event
Volunteers for the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation were recognized during the annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration April 25 at Tucson Botanical Gardens.
More than 125 volunteers and staff members attended, including coordinators and volunteer resources managers Lisa Carter and Danielle Walsh; committee members Krista Balmer, Vera Bowlby, Jessica Celentano and Hector Quiroz.
Award recipients: Business Leadership Award to Wells Fargo; Client Services Award to Scott McManus; Development Award to Kevin Casey; Distinguished Service award to Howard Tuller; Education Award to Phil Bossenbroek; Food For Life Award to Delores Ceballos and Knights of Pythias; Jean Cicci Peer Counseling Award to John Jackson; Jerome Beillard Self-Empowerment Award to Curt Beall; Longtime Volunteer Award to Gary Phelan; Media Leadership Award to Access Tucson; New Volunteer Award to Morgan Schafer; New Prevention Services Award to Dayon Burnett; Original Contribution Award to Michael Halchak; Outstanding Prevention Contribution Award to Patrick Cook; Reception Award to Michael Kling; Volunteer Resources Award to Janet Munson; Group Volunteer Effort Award to the 2006 AIDSWALK Committee; Staff Volunteer Award to Jack Rice; and Volunteer of the Year to Peter Bleasby.
Nearly 500 attend Crystal Apple event, raise $30,000
More than $30,000 was raised for youth programs at the Metropolitan Education Commission's 17th Annual Crystal Apple Awards Luncheon on May 9 at the Doubletree Hotel.
The event honored 11 outstanding teen citizens: Chantal Tellez Koestel of Sunnyside High School, who was also a Crystal Apple Award winner; Billy Morrison from Alice Vail Middle School; Shaina Shay of University High School; Laura Schaun of Presidio High School; Alex Chernobelskiy of Rincon High School; Sean Takerian of Catalina Foothills High School; Jesse Geborkoff of Sierra Middle School; Chandria Mosher of Amphitheater High School; Amber Horvath of St. Gregory College Preparatory School; Alexandria Escalante from Amphitheater High School; and Edward Gillmore from Fred G. Acosta Job Corps.
Also honored were the "Goal One: Graduate!/meta Numero Uno: Graduar!" poster contest winners: Carmen Amavizca of Drexel Elementary School; Leanna Stephens of Coronado K-8 School; and Alice Cai of Catalina Foothills High School.
Nearly 500 attendees were entertained by the Los Diablitos Mariachis from the Sunnyside School District. The Flowing Wells School District prepared the table decorations.
Other Crystal Apple Award recipients included the teacher award to Kristin Bourguet of Marana High School; and the small-business award to Javalina's Coffee and Friends.
Sponsors included Qwest Communications, Wells Fargo, 3D International and A Parsons Company.
