Sen. John McCain's sense of humor is both his strength and a weakness.
The Arizona senator seeking the Republican presidential nomination goofed with his off-the-cuff humor Wednesday. Campaigning in South Carolina, his response to a question about military action against Iran, taken from the rock classic "Barbara Ann," was inappropriate.
"That old, eh, that old Beach Boys' song, 'Bomb Iran,' " he said. "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, anyway, ah . . . ," according to wire reports.
His audience chuckled. But it had another, more sobering effect. The news of it left us squirming uncomfortably. His comments appeared cavalier and insensitive. Not what we expect from our state's senior senator.
MoveOn.org called the comment "dangerous." According to wire reports, it is launching a campaign against McCain, arguing that the nation "can't afford another reckless president."
McCain is at his best when his humor is self-effacing and self-deprecating. This was a worse use of humor — making light of a volatile, potentially deadly situation.
Come on, John, focus.
