A 25-year-old teacher's aide from a Sierra Vista middle school was arrested Thursday night on suspicion that he had sex with two girls younger than 16 over the past year, police said.
Kenneth Eric Boughton-Eaton was booked into the Cochise County jail on four counts of child molestation, four counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of sexual abuse, said Sierra Vista Police Department Detective Nick Lamay.
Boughton-Eaton is a paraprofessional at Apache Middle School, said Donna Avina, a spokeswoman for Sierra Vista Public Schools. As an aide, he works one-on-one with a special-education student, but that student is not the one he is accused of having sex with, she said.
He has worked at the middle school since January of 2005.
Apache Middle School's principal, Jeff Spencer, contacted police Wednesday after a parent called the school and said Boughton-Eaton had an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old female student, Avina said.
An investigation raised suspicion that Boughton-Eaton had sexual contact with two female students, one who is now 15 and one now 13, for about a year, Lamay said. Citing the investigation, he declined to comment on whether or not the sexual relationships were ongoing when Boughton-Eaton was arrested.
Sierra Vista Public Schools issued a statement Friday that the aide has been placed on paid leave while the district tries to determine if there were any violations of district policy, which forbids sexual relationships between students and staffers.
Boughton-Eaton is not allowed on the Apache Middle School campus nor is he allowed to attend any off-campus Apache functions, according to the statement.
The district will take any criminal charges into consideration while conducting its investigation, Avina said.
There's no indication at this point that Boughton-Eaton had inappropriate relationships with any other students, she said.
The district plans to send a letter to the parents of Apache and Sierra Vista middle school students saying that student safety is one of the district's highest priorities. They will also provide students with whatever support and assistance they might need.
"We will move forward and we will provide counseling for any students who might need it," Avina said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sierra Vista Police Department at 1-520-458-3311.
