The hottest trend in music and electronics has hit the highest office in the state.
Seems Gov. Janet Napolitano is crazy about her iPod.
"I feel proud of myself that I actually have an iPod, which I love by the way," she told reporters during a casual chat before her weekly press conference. "Once you get one of them, they are so great."
So, what's on it?
"A lot of opera," she says.
"My staff, God bless them, threatened to read memos onto my iPod," she joked. "I was like, don't be gaming my iPod. Stay away from my iPod."
Mr. Farley goes to Phoenix
A recent posting on Craigslist caught the attention of a few politicos:
"I am a committed environmentalist from Tucson who happens to serve in the State Legislature in Phoenix," read the posting, which quickly made its may onto Democratic blogger Ted Prezelski's site (rumromanismrebellion.net). "We don't yet have the commuter rail I am working on, so for now, I have to have a car … If you cherish a Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, or Honda Civic Hybrid with less than 100,000 miles, and would like your car to have a loving new home to help me preserve the Arizona environment, I can pay cash (up to $8,000) and would like to do so ASAP."
The creator of the ad was, of course, Tucson's Steve Farley — a Democratic state representative who has committed his political career to trolleys, trains and mass transit solutions.
The Farleys are a one car family, so Steve has to hitch rides with friends up to Phoenix and bike and walk to the Capitol during the week.
"I hate the idea of having two cars," he says. But in the absence of the Tucson-Phoenix commuter line Farley longs for, getting back and forth every week has become difficult — hence the search for a car.
Turns out he may have found a deal. Farley and his daughter are flying to Oklahoma City next week to check out a Honda Insight, and hope they enjoy an ultra-clean road trip back home.
The council contests
Republicans have found a candidate to go up against Ward 4 Councilwoman Shirley Scott.
Dan Spahr says he's "jazzed" about running. The 59-year-old financial planner says he's concerned about crime, transportation and Downtown redevelopment. He moved to Tucson from Ohio four years ago.
As for the mayor's race, still no prominent Democrat stepping forward to challenge Republican Bob Walkup. Who would've guessed Walkup would be the local equivalent of Janet Napolitano or FDR?
Construction worker Joshua Garcia has filed papers to run. Meanwhile, Michael Toney — a regular speaker at council meetings — has withdrawn his name from the race.
