Bassoon player joins Musica Pacifica for early-music program

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.26.2007
Normally, Musica Pacifica performs as a quartet, but on Sunday the group returns to Tucson with a few extra musicians in tow, including a world-renowned bassoonist.
Michael McCraw, who heads the early-music program at Indiana University's School of Music, is described by the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as one of the most important early-bassoon players of our time. It's probably not an exaggeration if you consider McCraw's résumé: He's performed with prestigious ensembles such as Musica Antiqua Köln, Concentus Musicus Wien, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Tafelmusik Orchestra.
McCraw joins Musica Pacifica — Judith Linsenberg on recorder, Elizabeth Blumenstock on violin, David Morris on cello and Charles Sherman on harpsichord — for a concert that includes works by Vivaldi (Concerto in D minor, RV 481 and Trio in A minor, RV 86), Handel (Sonata in G minor, Op. 2, No. 5) and Telemann (Concerto in F major). Other guests artists joining the ensemble have not been announced.
Sunday's concert, featuring recorder, violins, viola, cello, contrabass, bassoon and harpsichord, begins at 3 p.m. at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave., at River Road. Tickets are $18, $15 for seniors and $5 for students at the door or through the Arizona Early Music Society, 733-1696.
