Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.23.2007
Taking certain antidepressants every day doubles the risk of fractures among adults age 50 and older, according to a study.
The results also showed that older patients who took a type of depression medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, had weaker bones and fell more often. The study, led by researchers from McGill University in Montreal, is published today in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Depression affects about 10 percent of older adults in the United States. SSRIs — such as Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa and Paxil — are a first-choice therapy in treating symptoms, researchers said.
The results suggest that doctors need to weigh the benefits of SSRIs for depression with the increased risk of fractures as they make treatment decisions, the study said.
"Patients and physicians should be aware there is this increased risk, and patients should be encouraged to follow a lifestyle for osteoporosis," said David Goltzman, professor of medicine at McGill University and the study's principal investigator.
The study followed 5,008 Canadian adults 50 years and older for more than five years. Daily use of SSRIs was reported by 137 of the study's subjects.
Results suggest that SSRIs may have a direct weakening effect on bones, making them more susceptible to fracture, Goltzman said.
SSRIs work on serotonin, one of the brain's chemical messengers in an area of the brain that controls mood. Serotonin metabolism is also necessary for bone cells to work properly and produce bone cells, Goltzman said.
