ATLANTA — Even those who claim to lack an ounce of style knowledge recognize a truly hideous ensemble when they see one. This year brought plenty of moments when people gathered around the television, computer screen or newspaper to exclaim, "What were they thinking?"
With that in mind, the Atlanta Journal Constitution's fashion staff compiled a few of the most memorable outfits of 2006. From Ugly Betty to Katie Couric, our list celebrates the good, the bad and the truly unthinkable.
The good
Reese Witherspoon's Oscar gown. After photos of actress Kirsten Dunst proved that Witherspoon's "one of a kind" Chanel dress from the Golden Globes wasn't so unique, the actress made a bold move for the Oscars. The Best Actress winner drew raves on the red carpet because her dress wasn't over-the-top, it wasn't tacky — and it certainly wasn't borrowed.
Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada." Simply put, that icy stare and coiffed hair made Meryl Streep one stylish devil, that's all.
Rapper T.I. at the BET Hip-Hop Music Awards. This multiple award winner put the hood in hoodie — adding graphic embellishments to the fashion staple.
Daniel Craig in "Casino Royale." No, Daniel Craig as James Bond is not pretty, but he cleans up well. Long live the new blond Bond bombshell.
Katie Couric's debut on "CBS Evening News." The first female news anchor donned a white blazer for her first day with CBS, normally a fashion no-no for television. Clearly, white adds 10 pounds — of credibility.
The bad
"Ugly Betty" and that Guadalajara poncho. Talk about making a fashion statement. When Betty erupted onto the screen in metal braces and a fire-engine-red poncho, few knew that America Ferrera would have such a dramatic impact on Thursday night's must-see TV lineup.
Emmitt Smith on "Dancing With the Stars." This former NFL great made some cool moves on the dance floor while trying to prove that real men do samba in sequins.
Rachel Zoe's fashion formula. You may not recognize her, but this stylist's template has been applied to various shrinking Hollywood startlets, including Lindsay Lohan and Mischa Barton. But recently, Zoe took a very public licking when Nicole Richie dumped the woman behind her wispy bangs and tiny frame.
The unthinkable
Britney Spears' "Dateline NBC" interview. The pregnant pop tart defended her marriage wearing a sheer low-cut blouse, denim miniskirt and loosely applied false eyelashes. The interview — and the outfit — left many viewers speechless.
Spears' Fed-ex outfits. Many applauded when the singer dumped husband Kevin Federline after the birth of their second child. But Spears' declaration of independence quickly became a little too freewheeling as photos of her — sans undergarments! — popped up on the Internet.
