SCOTTSDALE — State child welfare officials will investigate a Scottsdale woman who was arrested after leaving her toddler son in her car while shopping in a Neiman Marcus store.
Gardenia Zakrzewski Johansson, 39, was arrested by Scottsdale police on suspicion of child neglect Monday as she left the store. She had taken her dog inside but left her sleeping 2-year-old son in her BMW.
Arizona Child Protective Services spokeswoman Liz Barker confirmed Wednesday the office received a report of neglect involving the child and will conduct a safety-risk assessment to determine whether the boy has a safe home.
Police were called to Scottsdale Fashion Square after two valets reported Johansson had asked them to watch her son and not to tell anybody, according to a police report. Johansson returned to the parking garage about 30 minutes later.
Johansson told officers she planned to tip the valets for watching over her child, the report said. She was briefly jailed before being released and did not return several phone calls seeking comment.
The child and the dog were picked up from the mall by Johansson's sister, police reported. Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said Johansson faces a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment.
Barker said CPS had no previous contact with the child and an investigation could take several months.
