Thoughts of knitted sweaters may fill the heads of gift givers and receivers this time of year, but there's more to the stitching technique than clothing.
"I'm personally into lace," says Elizabeth Wells, who organizes workshops for the Old Pueblo Knitters.
Wells knits doilies for the backs of chairs and to place under glass on bedside stands. She uses the lace as decorative edging for towels.
Other club members practice free-form knitting — kind of a crazy-quilt method of creating clothing, pillows and blankets — while still others specialize in afghan throws.
It's finding like-minded crafters in this mix that attracts about 110 knitters to the organization.
Details: Annual membership costs $20. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month, 9:30 a.m., at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.
Sample meeting topics: For most of the year, meetings focus on programs such as knitting designs, trunk shows or workshops on specific techniques. In the summer, the members knit together.
Year's biggest event: A biennial fashion show and luncheon "when our membership gets to show off all the things they are knitting," Wells says. The next one will be in 2008.
Other fun stuff: Workshop groups, charity projects and a Feb. 24 show and sale at Foothills Mall.
Latest buzz: Felted knitting. Wells explains it as knitting an oversize piece such as a purse or pillow out of pure wool, then washing it in hot water. The piece shrinks and has a felt texture.
Where members hang out: At "knit-in" groups at six locations throughout the Tucson area.
