Charlene Pesquiera, has a firm grasp of issues important to Tucson voters, particularly education, and the Star endorses her for the state Senate in District 26.
Pesquiera, a Democrat, faces Republican Al Melvin. District 26 covers parts of Tucson's North Side, the western half of the Foothills, the Northwest Side east of Interstate 10, Oro Valley and SaddleBrooke.
Pesquiera has lived in Arizona for 35 years, has worked mostly in juvenile and adult corrections, and is a college instructor in criminal justice. Her experience with the justice system gives her insight into the failings of the state's education system and where it can be improved. Pesquiera is a strong supporter of public education and advocates creating mentorship programs.
She also favors increasing teacher pay and raising academic standards to improve the quality of Arizona's schools.
On immigration, Pes-quiera favors a comprehensive border plan, including a guest-worker program, a crackdown on human smuggling and enforcement against companies that hire illegal entrants.
Pesquiera, who would be a moderate voice in the Legislature, is motivated by a strong desire to help many segments of our community. We endorse her to represent District 26 in the state Senate.
