UA to honor '97 softball champs at alumnae game Saturdaystaff and wire reports
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.25.2006
The UA softball program will host its annual alumnae game at noon Saturday at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
Admission is free, and there will be several pre-game festivities, including recognition of the 1997 national championship team's 10-year reunion. Gates open at 11 a.m.
"This is a chance to keep the tradition in our program active," coach Mike Candrea said in a statement. "It's important for any great program that is built on tradition to thank its players that helped make it what it is.
"We look forward to honoring some wonderful ladies from the '97 team, as well as to bridge the gap between the past and present in Arizona softball.
"It's important for our current student-athletes to meet the former players, and it is a great event to see all of the families of our former players," Candrea continued.

Cheruiyot out of hospital
CHICAGO — Robert Cheruiyot wore a wide grin and made one thing clear Tuesday as he finally celebrated his victory at the Chicago Marathon.
"I'm OK."
Cheruiyot, 28, left the hospital after spending two nights there with a mild concussion he sustained Sunday when he slipped crossing the finish line. Tuesday afternoon, he was presented with a trophy and a temporary medal with the event's logo. Soon, he will receive a sterling silver medal from Tiffany's engraved with his name.
Immediately after his fall, he had no recollection of what had happened and asked his coach if he had won. Cheruiyot is expected to make a full recovery but likely will take several months off from running.

SHANGHAI, China — Andy Roddick and Ivan Ljubicic clinched berths at the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup when other players in the running for the eight-player event lost matches Tuesday.
Roddick and Ljubicic will join No. 1 Roger Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal, who already had qualified for the Nov. 12-19 tournament at Shanghai's Qi Zhong Stadium.
Roddick clinched a spot when Marcos Baghdatis lost to Arnaud Clement 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at the Lyon Grand Prix on Tuesday, and Ljubicic's berth was secured when Tommy Robredo was upset by Wayne Arthurs 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at the St. Petersburg Open.
