UA sophomore tackles 2 incumbents for term on boardTucson, Arizona | Published: 10.22.2006
Three candidates — two incumbents and one University of Arizona student — are running this year for two open seats on the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board.
The four-year terms of board members Bruce Burke and current board president Adelita Grijalva expire this year.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Miguel Cuevas, a University of Arizona sophomore and an '05 graduate of Cholla High Magnet School, wants one of their seats. Cuevas should be a familiar face to the incumbents: During his senior year of high school, he was TUSD's student liaison to the governing board.
Running on his experience as a recent student, he also brings first-hand experience as a member of the first class subject to the standards of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
Candidates say some of the issues the board will face in the coming year include class-size reduction, employee salaries, closing the achievement gap among minority students, accountability of the desegregation budget and the search for a new superintendent.
